Cutting My First Dismal Quilt Blocks
This is my very first fabric, ever, from Spoonflower.
When I unpacked my very first order from Spoonflower (it was my own designs) I washed it and hung it in the closet and didn’t look at it again for a very long time. I ordered Petal Signature Cotton and it was less like traditional quilting cotton than I must have expected.
Then, plot twist, I got it out of the closet and thought “I don’t know what my problem was, this is great!” So I started cutting it into squares while I was waiting for something computer related and the more I cut it and held it in my hands the more I liked it.
Now it’s total love and more is on the way.

My Dismal patterns give me so much joy and reassurance in all their forms and formats but cutting them into the beginnings of a quilt was way incredibly fun.
Seriously if you are a rural woman and you have never experienced quilting, get out some scissors because you are in for a treat. Cut it apart, sew it back together and you get inner peace. It’s a classic for a reason.
I do actually own a rotary cutter and a mat and a grid but I really do believe in just starting. Do what you can, with what you have, where you are sort of thing and also I just really like scissors.

If you are a seasoned quilter or fabric enthusiast but have never tried Spoonflower, there is a chance you might balk at your first impression like I did.
However I would encourage you to do a small project before making your final judgement. Print on demand has made several aspects of my Dismal world possible in a way that they would not have been before. The ability to bring projects into reality without the huge overhead of an initial inventory means that the world can see creative works from individuals like me.
And print on demand has been around for a while now and I look forward to a very bright future as advances continue to be made.

I was very sad when I was out of squares that needed cut out. So then I started cutting those in half into triangles. And playing with block arrangements. And snapping pictures for reference.
Then I decided I needed to finish my current project before I change the thread in the sewing machine and just shove the current project to the side. So that held up the Dismal love considerably but wow I had fun cutting these block pieces.
Spoonflower is a platform where artists like me can upload their design work and customers can order a wide variety of fabrics, wallpapers and home goods. So they connect us.
And I love Petal Signature Cotton.
